A Series 1 E-Type — the specification enthusiasts consider the purest expression of Jaguar's most famous shape.
A Series 1 E-Type in British Racing Green, the version enthusiasts consider the purest of the line. Covered headlamps, toggle switches, 4.2L inline-six with the improved gearbox. Presented in show condition with a documented history.
Model background
Jaguar launched the E-Type at the Geneva show in 1961, and its aerodynamic body — shaped by Malcolm Sayer, an aerodynamicist rather than a stylist — made every rival look suddenly old. From late 1964 the 4.2-litre engine arrived alongside an all-synchromesh gearbox and improved seats, which is the combination this car carries.
Series 1 cars are distinguished by their covered headlamps and toggle-switch dashboard, details that were lost in later revisions and that collectors continue to prize.
Design and character
The long bonnet, small cabin and tapering tail create one continuous line, and British Racing Green over a wood-rimmed, toggle-switch interior is the definitive period presentation.
It is a fast, comfortable grand tourer with a smooth straight-six and a genuinely usable gearbox — an easy car to shoot around.
Historical significance
The E-Type is one of the most frequently cited designs in motoring history and has long been held up as an example of industrial design as much as engineering — a shape drawn to move air rather than to decorate.
Series 1 cars, with their covered headlamps and toggle-switch cabin, are the specification most closely associated with that original 1961 impression.
Why productions choose it
Few cars communicate a decade as quickly. A single profile shot of an E-Type places a scene in sixties Britain or transatlantic sixties glamour with no dialogue required.
The long bonnet gives composition room for wide and tracking shots, while the chrome, wire wheels and instrument detailing hold up in macro inserts.
On camera
Notes for directors, DPs and photographers planning to put this car in frame.
- Instantly recognisable in profile, which makes it effective in silhouette and in short cuts.
- Dark green reads elegant rather than flashy — suited to period drama and fashion work alike.
- Covered headlamps and chrome detailing reward slow macro passes and detail inserts.
