The 300SL Roadster is one of the defining silhouettes of post-war motoring — the open-top evolution of the car that put Mercedes-Benz back on the world stage.
One of the defining silhouettes of post-war motoring. This Roadster was restored to factory specification in Stuttgart, retains its matching-numbers 3.0L inline-six, and has been maintained continuously since. Silver over red leather, soft top and hardtop, period-correct luggage.
Model background
Mercedes-Benz replaced the Gullwing coupé with the 300SL Roadster in 1957. The tubular spaceframe was revised so conventional doors could be fitted, and the car became a genuine open grand tourer rather than a race-derived coupé. Production ran until 1963, which makes the final cars the most developed of the line.
Its three-litre fuel-injected inline-six was remarkable for a road car of its era, and the model is widely regarded as one of the most significant sports cars of the twentieth century.
Design and character
The Roadster keeps the long bonnet, faired-in wheel arches and eyebrow trim of the coupé, with a low, uninterrupted cowl once the top is folded. Silver over red leather is the archetypal combination, and the car is presented with both soft top and hardtop, plus period-correct luggage.
It is a grand tourer first: measured, composed, and at ease at touring speed rather than theatrical.
Historical significance
The 300SL line is generally credited with re-establishing Mercedes-Benz as a builder of high-performance road cars after the war, and the Roadster is the version that made that performance usable day to day.
Because production ended in 1963, late Roadsters represent the most developed specification of a model that is now among the most closely studied of its generation.
Why productions choose it
The 300SL carries immediate status on screen. It reads as considered wealth and European taste rather than excess, which suits period drama, fashion editorial and luxury brand work.
Practically, an open two-seater with a folding top and a removable hardtop gives a production two distinct looks from a single booking, and keeps performers visible in driving coverage.
On camera
Notes for directors, DPs and photographers planning to put this car in frame.
- The open cabin keeps actors visible in driving shots — rare among cars of this stature.
- Silver bodywork holds detail in bright daylight and picks up rim light beautifully at dusk.
- Hardtop and soft top allow the same car to serve two visually distinct looks.
